Buying gold in Jordan: a practical guide
Seven steps in every purchase, and what to check at each one.
1. Know today’s price before you walk in
Open the home page here and note the sell price for the karat you want. The price is the same in every shop in Jordan because it is the syndicate bulletin.
2. Ask about workmanship before weighing
The fee differs from shop to shop and piece to piece. Ask for it in JOD per gram before the piece is weighed.
3. Check the hallmark
Every piece must carry the standards-institution hallmark showing the karat. Do not buy unmarked pieces.
4. Ask for an itemised invoice
Weight in grams, karat, gram price, workmanship and the shop name. You will need it to sell or exchange.
5. Compare bar, lira and jewellery
For saving: a certified bar or a lira, because their fees are low. For adornment: jewellery, accepting the loss of the fee at sale.
6. Timing
Nobody knows tomorrow’s direction. Savers buy regularly in fixed amounts instead of waiting for "the bottom".
7. When selling
The price is weight × the buy price for the karat. Ask more than one shop; the difference can reach a dinar per gram.
