Frequently asked questions

Why does the Jordan gold price differ from the global price?

Local price = global price + import commission + standards-institution fee + a margin by karat. The difference is usually about one dinar per 21k gram, more for 18k because its manufacturing cost is higher.

Is there sales tax on gold in Jordan?

Raw gold and jewellery are exempt from the general sales tax in Jordan. What you pay above the gram price is workmanship only.

What is workmanship and how much is it?

It is the cost of making the piece, added on top of the gram price. It usually ranges from one dinar for plain pieces and liras to ten dinars or more for intricate or stone-set jewellery, and it is not refunded when you sell.

When is the syndicate bulletin published?

Usually in the morning between 10 and 11, and it may be updated in the afternoon if the global price moves a lot. No bulletin is issued on Fridays; Saturday’s bulletin is based on Friday’s global close.

Why does the price not change on Saturday and Sunday?

Global gold markets are closed from Friday evening to Sunday evening Amman time, so the global price stays at Friday’s close. Jordanian jewellers work on Saturday with a syndicate bulletin built on that close.

What is the difference between the Rashadi and English lira?

The Rashadi is an Ottoman coin of about 7 grams; the English lira (sovereign) is counted as 8 grams in Jordan. Both are priced on a 21k basis: weight × gram price plus a small fee.

Which karat is best for saving?

For pure saving, 24k or 21k bars and liras, because their fees are low and they resell at close to the gram price. For jewellery that is worn and sold later, plain 21k designs hold value better than intricate 18k pieces.

How do I verify the karat of gold I buy?

Every piece in Jordan must carry the standards-institution hallmark showing the karat. Ask for an invoice with the weight, karat and workmanship; you will need it when selling.

Are the prices on this site official?

The global price comes from spot gold markets; shop prices come from the syndicate bulletin as published by Jordanian news agencies and are checked against the global price. When no new bulletin is available, an estimate is shown with a clear notice. Prices are indicative and not an offer to buy or sell.

Can I use this data on my website?

Yes. There is an open JSON API and a ready widget, provided you credit GoldPrice JO with a link. Details on the API page.

What is an Ottoman (Osmali) lira?

Osmali means Ottoman. It is the Ottoman gold lira, best known in its Rashadi and Hamidi issues, priced in Jordan as 7 g of 21k.

What does a shop pay for used gold?

The published buy price for the karat (about 4 to 5% below the sell price for 21k) times the weight after deducting stones, with no refund of workmanship.

What is the difference between Italian and Arabic gold?

Italian is 18k, light and fine with a high fee; Arabic is 21k, heavier, with a low fee, and holds value better on resale.

Is white gold more expensive than yellow gold?

The gram price is the 18k price, but the fee is higher and the rhodium plating needs renewing. On resale it is valued at the 18k buy price.

What is the silver gram price in Jordan?

It is shown on the silver price page and refreshes every 10 minutes: 999 and 925 (sterling) grams in JOD and USD with estimated shop prices.

How much is the making charge on gold?

Roughly 1 to 6 JOD per gram for 21k depending on the piece, 8 to 20 JOD for Italian 18k, and 1 to 3 JOD per lira. It is not refunded on resale.

Does the gold price differ between Amman, Irbid and Zarqa?

No. One bulletin covers the whole kingdom because the syndicate issues it. Only workmanship differs between shops.

What is the nisab for zakat on gold?

85 g of pure (24k) gold, about 97 g of 21k. Zakat is 2.5% of the value at today’s price; the site’s calculator does the maths.

Is gold cheaper in Jordan than in Dubai or Saudi Arabia?

The global gram price is the same everywhere; differences come from taxes, syndicate margins and fees. Jordan has no sales tax on gold and the syndicate margin is about one dinar per gram, so the gaps are small compared with workmanship.
