Who sets the gold price in Syria
The General Authority for Precious Metals Management, formed on 12 February 2025, sets Syria’s daily gold price. The price reaches jewellers through the jewellers’ associations in each governorate, which is why many people still search for the price “according to the jewellers’ association”.
The Authority publishes selling and buying prices per gram for 21k, 18k and 24k, in Syrian pounds and in US dollars, one to three times a day. The price can therefore change during the day, and today’s updates table on this page lists each new price with its time.
The gold price in Damascus today is this same bulletin price, because the Damascus jewellers’ association passes the Authority’s price on to shops.
New and old pounds: how to read the gold price
The new Syrian pound replaced the old one at 100 old pounds to 1 new pound. The exchange began on 1 January 2026, and the old notes stopped being legal tender on 31 July 2026. They can now be exchanged only at the Central Bank of Syria in Damascus, for five years.
Gold is now quoted in new pounds. Multiply by 100 for the old-pound equivalent: a 21k gram at SYP 16,400 is 1,640,000 old pounds.
When you compare today’s price with prices from before 2026, remember those were in old pounds, and divide them by 100 first.
The bulletin’s dollar rate and the Central Bank of Syria rate
The Central Bank of Syria’s official dollar rate is SYP 121.62 today, and the market rate in Damascus is higher. The dollar prices in the gold bulletin match the market rate: dividing the 21k gram’s pound price by its dollar price gives SYP 141.38 per dollar, about 16% above the official rate.
That is why gold in Syria moves with both the world ounce and the market dollar. One more pound on the dollar adds about SYP 116 to a 21k gram if the ounce does not move.
Converted at the Central Bank rate, the bulletin’s dollar price would give a 21k gram of only about SYP 14,100, below the pound price in the bulletin that shops use.
Selling price, buying price and making charge
The selling price in the bulletin is what you pay when you buy gold; the buying price is what a shop pays you when you sell. Today the gap for 21k is SYP 300 a gram.
The bulletin price is for the gold alone; the making charge is added when you buy jewellery. Syria charges no VAT on gold.
21k is 87.5% pure gold, 18k is 75% and 24k is pure gold. Today 18k is SYP 2,400 a gram cheaper than 21k, and 24k is SYP 2,500 more expensive.
Before you buy or sell gold in Syria
- Check the time of the latest bulletin; the price can change up to three times a day.
- Ask for the price in new pounds, and divide any old-pound figure you hear by 100.
- Ask for the making charge per gram before the piece is weighed, and compare shops.
- Ask for an invoice with the weight, karat, gram price and making charge.
- When you sell, compare the shop’s offer with the buying price in the official bulletin.
How this page calculates prices
We copy the selling and buying prices for 21k, 18k and 24k as the General Authority for Precious Metals Management publishes them, in new pounds and in US dollars, and show every change we capture during the day. The old-pound column is the new-pound price × 100.
We get the bulletin’s dollar rate by dividing the 21k pound price by its dollar price, and use it for the world price in the table. The chart is in US dollars because the pound was redenominated in 2026, so prices before and after the change cannot be compared directly.
