What the gold pound is
The gold pound is a saving coin struck in 21k at 8 grams (7 grams of pure gold), with halves (4 g) and quarters (2 g). Savers prefer it because its premium is lower than jewellery’s and any shop will buy it.
Why the price differs between makers
The gold in a pound is worth the same everywhere; the difference is the premium. Coins from well-known makers sell a little higher but are also bought back at a better price, so always ask for the buy-back price before you buy.
Pound or bar for saving
An 8-gram 24k bar holds more pure gold than a pound (8 versus 7 grams) and is worth about EGP 57,624 today. The pound is easier to sell and split; the bar gives more pure gold per pound spent on larger sums.
